VANCOUVER BALBOA MINI FEST

July 1-3, 2016 in Vancouver, BC

FRIDAY, JULY 1ST - PROF SMACK'S VIDEO DJ NIGHT
Fri

Join us on Friday for a very special Video DJ night! Professor Smack, the Vancouver Swing Scene's foremost scholar and historian of jazz and swing and our VJ for the night, is curating a collection of high-quality clips of big bands and swing music of all types. Expect old favourites and rare footage, all of it swinging and in the pocket for balboa.

SATURDAY, JULY 2ND - SLIPPED DISC
Sat

Saturday night will feature perennial Vancouver favourites Slipped Disc. Influenced by the Benny Goodman Sextet and Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five, Slipped Disc know for their driving rhythms, and tight ensemble arrangements. Beloved by Vancouver's swing dancers, they have also performed at Camp Jitterbug in Seattle.

Slipped Disc will be joined by Seattle's Travis Whetman, who will be DJing the band breaks.

SUNDAY, JULY 3RD - BC MCGEES
Sun

In the 1980s, many of the orginial balboa dancers began gathering at a restaurant called Bobby McGees where they would dance, drink, and socialize. Much of the footage we have of these dancers is "home movie" style clips from these nights.

We hope to bring some of the spirit of the Bobby McGees dances with our BC McGees dance at Pat's Pub. Join us for a drink, social time with your new friends, and lots and lots of dancing.

Seattle's DJ Travis Whetman, known for his vast collection of swinging tunes, will be spinning for us on Sunday as well as during the Saturday band breaks.
